Hero who cleared 100 Taliban bombs before death awarded George Medal posthumously

Staff Sgt Brett Linley, was given the second highest award for gallantry after he calmly defused three IEDs (Improvised Explosive Device) to clear the way to retrieve a dead comrade’s personal effects.

In a statement the Ministry of Defence said that there was “no doubt” that his actions during his tour in Helmand had “saved many lives, both Afghan and British”.

EOD teams up with other agencies to increase skills

The Marine Corps Air Station Explosive Ordnance Disposal team conducted a joint training operation that allowed both EOD team and the Arizona Department of Public Safety to learn each other’s equipment and tactics in an effort to foster a solid working relationship.

The weapons of choice of U.S. enemies, improvised explosive devices, are like deadly viruses that mutate in reaction to vaccines. They cannot be wiped out, only temporarily thwarted.

“I liken the IED a little bit to malaria,” said the Army’s Chief Scientist Scott Fish. “We have a lot of solutions to malaria. But it adapts and evolves over time.”
