Marine Staff Sgt. Stephen J. Dunning, 31, of Milpitas, was killed Thursday in Afghanistan.
The U.S. Department of Defense said Dunning was an explosive ordinance disposal technician, and was killed while attempting to disarm an explosive device in the Helmand province when he was killed.

Staff Sgt. Nicholas Sprovtsoff, 28, of Davison died Sept. 28 in Helmand province along with Sgt. Christopher Diaz, 27, of Albuquerque, N.M., the Defense Department said. He was assigned to the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, out of Camp Pendleton, Calif.
26, of Canton, Ohio; assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; died Aug. 6 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations.
29-year-old Gunnery Sgt. Ralph E. Pate Jr. of Marion, S.C. died June 26th. Pate, an explosive ordnance disposal technician assigned to 2nd EOD Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C., joined the Marine Corps in 1998.
USMC SSgt Justin Schmalstieg was KIA in Sangin District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan on 15 December 2010, during combat operations against the enemy. He is survived by his wife Ann, and his parents.
Gunnery Sergeant Darrell W. Boatman, 38, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, died on November 4, 2005, at Landstuhl Reginal Medical Center, Germany, from wounds sustained on November 2, 2005, from an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations in the vicinity of Habbaniyah, Iraq. He was assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Private Marts first entered Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego for training on 20 July 1982. Upon completion of recruit training Private First Class Marts was transferred to Marine Corps Engineer School at Court House Bay, Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. After completing Basic Combat Engineer School, PFC Marts was transferred to Okinawa, Japan for duty with 9th Engineer Support Battalion.
